Welcome to our introduction to DEMOquick. In this tutorial you will learn how to quickly create demos and tutorials, using advanced features including graphic overlays, voice, and music.
To illustrate the power of DEMOquick, this 30 minute tutorial took only 2 days to complete, most of which was composing the PopUp messages.

This diagram illustrates the flow of the demo. The application simulation files (captured with MIMIC as "file.AVI") are the basis for the demo. Each captured frame represents a keystroke or mouse click, and the corresponding screen changes. The demo advances frame by frame to simulate each detail, with stops at frames where a PopUp message has been entered. Graphics, music, and voice are also delivered.
The simulation frames are highly compressed to save disk space and contain only screen differences from one event to the next.

Each demo has a master "Script File" which is simply a list of .AVI simulation files (captured by MIMIC) to be used. The file name is in the form of "yourdemo.MSR. In this dialog box you provide a name and location for your new Script File.
Since the two simulation files you will be using are simulations of the Write word processor, let's call this script file WRITE.MSR.

Remove PopUp - delete the popup message at this frame
PopUp Options - modify several properties of the popup
Graphic Options - Overlay a custom graphic on frame
AVI Still Frame - Add a clip from a different simulation file
Speech Options - Record a voice segment for this frame
Music Options - Play a music (MIDI) segment at this step
Run Options - Set delivery options such as frame speed
The horizontal scroll bar (under "Frame:") allows you to move frame-by-frame through the simulation. The < and > on the far left and right enable you to move to the next or previous frame containing a pop-up message, skipping all the frames between messages.

In these examples we only added a few PopUp windows. Note that a single demo (using one or more .AVI simulations) can have up to 200 PopUp messages.
PopUp messages can be created and edited interactively (as we did here) or they can be created outside of DEMOquick and "Imported". Messages can also be "Exported", edited and spell-checked by other programs, then "Imported" again. See "Import-Export" in the DEMOquick manual or the DEMOquick on-line HELP.
Now, let's save this and go over the last 2 main development steps.

When the finished demo is distributed, a program called DEMORUN is responsible for running the demo on your users system.
In order to test your new demo using DEMORUN, you must first "Build" the demo files using the "Build Demo" button on the main menu. This compiles all the demo control and messages for each simulation together into one data file to be used by DEMORUN.
Click the > and watch as "Build Demo" is done...

You may now run the demo using DEMORUN. To use DEMORUN, you must exit from DEMOquick, choose the DEMORUN icon, and choose the demo master file (.MSR) for the demo you created. If you find any mistakes in the demo you can go back to DEMOquick "Edit PopUps" and make changes. Just remember to "Build Demo" again before you test with DEMORUN.
Once you have a good demo, you need to create distribution disks. To get all of the demo data and simulation files together you must use the "Create Disk" function. This function puts all the demo files into a single directory and compresses them. Then all you have to do is copy that directory to a floppy and the demo is ready to distribute. ....scroll please------------------------->
The floppy you create contains all the "data" for the demo. The programs are contained on a standard demo distribution "Program Disk". Your user loads the program disk first (with SETUP as with other Windows applcations), then is asked to insert one (or more) data disks to load the demo(s) you created.
You demo may be small enough to fit on the Program disk, making a single disk demo.

The "Import" and "Export" functions were mentioned earlier. These are under the "File" menu item on the main DEMOquick menu.
<----------------------
Import allows you to create and edit PopUp messages as simple text files with WRITE, WORD, or other editors and then read them into the demo.
Export allows you to create a simple text file from the PopUp messages for spell checking or for use in documentation.
Please click on > and let's go on to Voice and Music.

The Speech Options dialog allows you to select sections of a pre-recorded voice file (.WAV) or to record a new section "Right Now" as you look at the screen.
Since a pre-recorded voice file was found, DEMOquick uses it and asks you to define the section to be run.
The "From" and "Length" are in milliseconds (1 second = 1000 milliseconds). Using programs that come with your sound board, you can determine where the time markers should go and create an "edit list".
Click > and watch as From & Length are entered.

Next let's add some music for this step. In the previous step you used a .WAV file for voice. There is only one .WAV file for each complete demo. The demo uses sections of it.
Not so for music. At each step where you specify music, a different pre-recorded MIDI (filename.MID) file can be specified. You could record your own, but there are many libraries of pre-recorded music. Be careful of copyrights though...
